Meetings

The Atlanta Branch meets the second Wednesday of each month September through May at the Ansley Golf & Country Club. If you are a professional woman in the arts and would be interested in attending one of our luncheon meetings, please contact us by Email: info@atlantapenwomen.org

The program our members most enjoy is “Painted Sounds” whereby we interpret one another’s art in our own medium. Here’s an example:

This piece represents the synergy and creative potential of being a Pen Woman…for the organization provides collaborative opportunities among writers, artists, and composers.

Tsunami” features poetry by Frances Patton Statham, music and narration by Candace Long, and art by Mimi Gould.

Each Spring the Atlanta Branch has a one-day, multi-category art exhibit and luncheon at the Ansley Golf and Country Club in Atlanta. Here are highlights from our 2011 exhibit:

Nationally recognized artist, Margaret Dyer, judges the show.   Art member Sherry Needle is awarded “People’s Choice” for her painting “Look Away, Look Away.”

Artist, Mikki Dillon, wins a ribbon in the mixed media category.

At our last meeting of the year, we celebrate our Annual Community Awards by honoring a Georgia-based Writer, Artist and Composer who have made significant contributions to our state. Here are our 2011 honorees:

Composer of the Year, Alexandra Pajak, is an Athens, Georgia native. Her compositions have been profiled in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Scientific American, Nature Medicine, University of Georgia Research Magazine, and many more. She recently composed a CD of children’s songs for the Ocean Society whose curriculum is placed in over 20,000 U.S. schools. Ms. Pajak is seen here with husband, Chris.   Writer of the Year, Juanita Hughes, grew up in Whitfield County, Georgia. She has been published weekly in the Cherokee Tribune since 2003. Her latest book, Tie Me To Your Apron Strings Again, is a memoir of her mother. Seen here with Atlanta Branch member and friend, Polly Craig.

Large granite stones create a path through the nature garden. Visitors hiking on Stone Mountains trails often stop and visit the path and garden.   Mikki Dillon takes advantage of the lovely natural setting of the Pen Women Nature Garden in Stone Mountain to do a plein air pastel.

Members enjoy the beautiful Atlanta Spring with a picnic in the garden.   Atlanta Pen Women find camaraderie with their sisters in the arts. Left to right: Sherry Needle, D’Ann Medlin, LuAnn Faulkender, Polly Craig.

Monthly meetings also have delicious lunches. Left to right: Chrissy Thead, Jan Fredrickson, Carmen Noakes.   Best-selling author Haywood Smith shares her writing and life experiences with us at a meeting.

Junko Ono Rothwell, Artist of the Year, is a master pastelist of the Pastel Society of America. She is also a member of excellence of the Atlanta Artists Club and Southeastern Pastel Society. Ms. Rothwell is a Fellow of the American Artist Professional League, New York, and a member of the Pastel Society of Japan. Seen here with her guest and Atlanta Branch art members, Sherry Needle and Mikki Dillon.   Letters member Ruth Miller and art member Mozelle Funderburk learn how to design jewelry from art member and presenter LuAnn Faulkender at an interactive meeting.
